PROGRAMME :
1- An Overwiev of Turkish Shipbuilding Industry
AUTHOR ; Yaşar Duran, Turkish Ministry of Transportation, Shipbuilding and Shipyards Division, General Manager
2- Technological Aspects of Turkish Shipbuilding Industry
AUTHOR ; Prof. Dr. Mustafa Insel, CEO of Turkish Loyd
3- IIW SELECT COMMITTEE ON SHIPBUILDING , 1997 - 2010 It has been found that close interaction between shipyards is necessary to maintain and improve competiveness of their maritime cluster, in a worldwide market. The will to co-operate is essential in the shipbuilding industry in order to maintain continued growth and profitability,
AUTHOR ; Richard Boekholt , Chairman IIW SC-Shipbuilding
4- ROBOT AUTOMATION MOVES ONE STEP FURTHER Automated Programming of multiple-robot solutions combines flexibility and efficiency in advanced working cells. Solutions, employing multiple robots, which are in operation at shipyards and other industries will be presented. The robot solutions are combining more processes, like welding and cutting in the same working cell.

5- IMAGE PROCESSING FOR AUTOMATED ROBOT WELDING The construction of seagoing ships needs many micro panels with maximal dimensions up to 16 x 4 m. About 2000 - 2300 micro panels with different sizes and about 20 - 25 various kinds of design are to be welded for a medium size containership from 1700 - 2400 TEU. These are fillet welds mainly between stiffeners and the panel plate. There are two different techniques to make panels : for very long and parallel stiffeners are weld gantries in use for both side fillet welding, but for longitudinal and transversal stiffeners , robotic welding is used. The flexible image processing system has been developed by IMG and now used by WADAN yards MTW, for robot welding delivering a very fast automatically generated program.

6- STATE OF THE ART IN SHIPBUILDING APPLICATIONS OF HYBRID LASER-ARC WELDING Laser welding and especially hybrid Laser / MAG welding shows due to very attractive properties as e.g. low distortion. High welding speed and easy automation give a great potential in the welding of structural steels. The shipbuilding industry is leading in the introduction of high power laser and laser-hybrid welding for structural applications and the major motivation for this is the reduced distortion. Today laser based welding is used quite extensively in European yards and the development will be reviewed. 7-ASPECTS OF MOTION AND PROCESS CONTROL FOR LASER BEAM WELDING. Laser results for process control of laser beam welding are presented and discussed. Although laser processing can be implemented as separate manufacturing steps, the full benefits can be exploited in an integrated set-up. The complex interplay between planning, production and control will be highlighted , in order to implement laser solutions with a maximum benefit and can be obtained by a multi-disciplinary approach.

8- AUTOMATED INTELLIGENT PANEL LINE USING HIGH POWER FIBERLASER - HYBRID TECHNOLOGY DELIVERS PANELS WITHOUT NEEDS FOR STRAIGHTENING OR REWORKING This report gives an overview of a 600 m long panel line for flat ship panels, including butt welds of 4 to 20 mm thick plates based on a gantry carrying a 10 kW fiber laser-hybrid welding head and a GMAW-Tandem torch and operating simultaneously on the same run. He gantry allows weld lengths up to 16m, the longest weld length achieved with IPG-fiber laser up to date. The described panel line is the newest and most automated panel line in the worldwide shipbuilding industry

9- FLEXIBLE - ASSEMBLY / FLAT PANEL PRODUCTION LINE FOR MID-SIZE SHIPYARDS Flexible flat panel production lines can be tailor-made for small and mid-size shipyards. The flexible production line includes one-or two-sided plate butt welding, longitudinal profile assembling & welding station and web welding, utilising a vision robot . Patented Vision robot is an efficient and user friendly welding station, which is very easy to implement to the production line and use by normal welders . New welding floor type conveyor line enables the welding of micro panels and full size flat panels in the same line.

10- THE WELDER AS A STRATEGIC RESOURCE IN SHIPBUILDING, A human Resource Perspective. The welder, either as an operator of mechanised or automated equipment or as qualified manual welder , is a key resource. It is essential that ways are found to keep qualified professional welders on the job up to a normal retirement age. In this report do we try to identify risks that need to be taken into account in the design of work places. In The Work Environment 2003 (Annual Report Swedish Official Statistics) , "welders and flame cutters" stood out in terms of heavy exposure and health effects, in several respects. For instance, welding constituted one ofof the occupations where more than half of the population reported being "worn out after work" (54%). High prevalence of pain in the musculoskeletal system every week was reported. There are a multitude of aspects that need to be taken into account in health surveillance as well as in the design of welding production systems and workplaces. There is every reason to believe that musculature skeletal ailments constitute the category of health disturbance causing a majority of chronic disease, absenteeism and early retirement for welders
